MINDFULLY AWARE PRACTICES HELP WITH PANIC AND OVERWHELM

Mindfulness practice is really involved with an object. You use an external object or the breath or ones senses to practice mindfulness, so you are constantly going back to the object to the object of mindfulness and not allowing the mind to run off in all directions. Mindfulness simply anchors the mind, so that it does not get to indulgent in thoughts etc. However from the Buddhist point of view, mindfulness is something that becomes transcended through development of awareness.

It is difficult for a beginner to become aware, you do not just become aware, but through the practice of mindfulness it is possible.

Then, when awareness develops from that stability, from that mindfulness, with the awareness comes the clarity aspect of mind. Once awareness develops, then one does not need to be mindful. Mindfulness is a deliberate thing whereas awareness is more spacious, more accommodating and allows us to be with whatever is arising, so therefore there is a sense of ease which becomes an antidote for the embattled mind.
