INTENTION by Shantideva

"May I be a guard for those who are protectorless,
A guide for those who journey on the road,
For those who wish to go across the water,
May I be a boat, a raft , a bridge

May I be an isle for those who yearn for landfall,
And a lamp for those who long for light,
For those who need a resting place, a bed
For all who need a servant, may I be their slave"

This tendency to be excessively concerned with our own self interest seems to only magnify our feelings of loneliness and disconnection, the issue is not simply about wanting happiness or not , it is about gaining it at the expense of others. The understanding that hurting others to protect ourselves is quite destructive to ourselves is the fulcrum of learning how to train the Mind .
We will never be able to genuinely engage authentically or meaningfully until we accustom ourselves to a radically different way of thinking and behaving as opposed to the practice of self deception
